As the deadline for a new master contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) approaches on September 30, 2024, negotiations have not progressed. With no formal discussions currently taking place, concerns are mounting about the potential for a strike across U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports that will have far-reaching economic impact. On September 27th, the Biden Administration called both parties to Washington, DC to individually meet with Secretary of Labor Julie Su, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, and other administration officials in hopes of making progress towards an agreement.
USMX filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging that the ILA has failed to bargain in good faith. This development comes amid growing industry anxiety over the possible disruptions to the flow of goods through maritime ports, which could have serious consequences for sectors ranging from agriculture to manufacturing.
GCCA supports efforts urging President Biden to take swift action and has joined coalition partners in calling for the Administration to engage with the parties to reach a deal. In addition, a letter from U.S. Senator Jerry Moran has been sent to the president highlighting the critical role ports play in facilitating the movement of goods, especially as the holiday and harvest seasons approach. The letter emphasizes the potential damage that would be caused by a port strike.
GCCA joins industry partners and policy makers in urging the Biden administration to step in and facilitate a resolution between the ILA and USMX. GCCA remains committed to monitoring the situation and advocating for solutions that protect the integrity of the cold chain and the broader supply chain.
