Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has released a report entitled “Canada’s National Pathways,” which looks to “healthier, more sustainable and more equitable food systems.”
The report identified factors contributing to food loss and waste throughout the food system, including: “lack of awareness of the issue; limits on quantification; operational inefficiencies; misalignment among supply chain actors; inadequate transportation, and storage; lack of clarity with regards to durable life date labelling; as well as household consumption patterns.” GCCA discussed the issue of food loss and waste with AAFC officials in June, and will continue to follow up.
The government notes that action they may consider “include establishing a consistent and transparent approach to defining, measuring, and monitoring food loss and waste, building collective commitment through specific reduction targets, and supporting hubs or networks to facilitate cross-sectoral collaborations and partnerships. The Government of Canada intends to build on this dialogue and explore options towards the development of a federal approach to better coordinate efforts across government to address food loss and waste.”
